famous restaurants. this is p chez panisse in berkeley. >> still an active scene. let me show you what is happening in front of chez panisse, this is an all wood fire. this fire is causing a lot of concern. it is mostly the exterior and it did get in the building and it is a while before the restaurant can open up again for business. we will take you through what happened. first call came in just after 3:00 this morning. someone saw flames and smoke coming from the outside of the building. called 911. the battalion chief was in the area. he was the first to arrive here and describe for us what he saw. >> i was the first on scene and we arrived in five minutes and had the whole front of the building on the first floor and down the south side of the building on the first floor. and with flames lapping up to the second floor. what had happened, this building is chez panisse, the restaurant. we have the manager that i am going to meet with. and discuss further what is going on. they are going to be out of business for some time. there is is some flame impingement to the area of the buildin

avenue on the north side of town. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is live at the scene at chez panisse to tell us the latest. >> reporter: the fire is under control. we know that investigators are currently on scene and they are trying to figure out how this happened. right now firefighters do not have a cause. we do know when berkeley fire first arrived on scene, they say the entire front part of the restaurant was covered in flames. firefighters got the call just after 3:00 this morning. the flames caused the sprinklers to go off and berkeley fire tells me the sprinklers played a key role in keeping this fire at bay. we are told if they had not gone off, the building could have become a complete loss. the public information officer says at this point it appears the fire started from the outside and we asked him if that made it suspicious. but he says at this point, it is too soon to tell. firefighters are trying to assess the damage and save what they can. you may note that this is chez panisse. this restaurant is well known for its use of local o

. it happened at chez panisse early this morning while most the damage is to the outside of the building the restaurant will likely be closed for some time. we are on the scene and just finished talking to the owner of chez panisse. >> reporter: she is very shaken by what happened. she was kind enough to toccatas. i know you just toured the vehicle. i know it was difficult. tell us how your restaurant looks this morning. >> i think -- we are very lucky that it happened in the middle of the night and nobody was there and nobody was hurt. the front porch of the restaurant is completely gone. i mean it's completely burned. it happened under the porch somehow. they don't know how. i think it -- it can be rebuilt. i think it's -- [inaudible] thank you. i think the cafe is intact. the big beams over the building have been saved and so i'm -- i feel very -- like we are very lucky. >> reporter: i know you said when you walked through it was emotional. its been here since 1971, a long time. you have been through a fire before and maybe those experiences made you -- survive this one better. >> a
around 3:00 this morning a fire broke out at chez panisse restaurant on the 1500 block of shattuck ave. we will now go live with will tran who is at the scene. >> for now, the fire is out. the chief is giving the owner a tour of the restaurant. he has cooked for a lot of famous people including the president. we do not know when this restaurant will reopen. here is video that we received. this is when they allowed us to get closer to the scene. according to the chief he stated that the fire started on the outside under the floorboards. the sprinklers inside the restaurant kick then to prevent the fire from born severely into the building. more of the damages on the outside than inside. there is damage on one of the floors but, they just have to go inside and look at the possible damage to the equipment but that is about it. we are waiting to hear from the chief as well as owner. this restaurant is not totally destroyed. it can be fixed. >> what about the people will have booked locations in advance? >> when she comes over she may go into detail. i will let you know when she comes out.
